Google Reader and Why You Should Use It

by stevensreeves on May 9, 2009

How would it be if you could have somebody watching the Internet on your behalf, selecting interesting stuff and putting it where you can find it, in your own time?

That sounds Nirvana to me – there’s so much going on I’d like to learn about, but of course nobody can watch everything.

Well that’s exactly what Google Reader does, or rather it picks up new items from RSS Feeds that we subscribe to and puts new posts in a directory we can organize and manage.

For Front Office Box we have Google Reader pick up feeds from all sorts of places.

We have search engines watching traffic for posts about certain topics, e.g. for a particular reason we’re interested in anything about Hypotension.

  • Google News Search
  • Google Blog Search
  • Twitter Search

tell us whenever there’s an item out there about Hypotension.  (We have lots of other searches going on, but this is a great example).

We also like to monitor what’s going on with our various Blogs and our production site.  Clicky does a great job of telling us about the people who visit us.

On top of that we like to stay in touch with whatever our “gurus” are saying so we pick up feeds from their blogs.

Google Reader watches all of these sources for us and delivers relevant articles to our page.  We can easily sift through literally hundreds of articles in a few minutes, reading the good stuff and ignoring the less interesting.  We’re in touch with what ever is being said, but with minimal effort.  And we can get to it in our own time, not missing anything because we were busy doing something else.

You can do the same, for free of course.  Google accounts get Reader in the package.

One last benefit is we’re watching the Internet and sharing anything we find that we think you might be interested in, including our own news and articles we publish.

Google Reader will pick up for you everything we publish.  All you need to do is subscribe to http://frontofficebox.info

Don’t be put off if this all sounds too complex.  It isn’t and we’ll be happy to help anybody.
