Reader from Sony

by stevensreeves on July 17, 2009

As a bit of a lark we published the Front Office Box blog to the Amazon Kindle library.  If anybody ever pays Amazon to download it we’ll get $0.69, but that wasn’t why we did it of course.

At the time the Kindle didn’t feel right to me – don’t know why but I didn’t check into it, so I can’t offer any sort of comparison.

But today I came across the Reader from Sony in Waterstones and this device impressed the hell out of me.

Similar in height and width to a small paperback, and perhaps 1cm. thick this is a really nice size for a device.

Software seems really good too (but I haven’t road tested so this is just an impression).

In the UK the device costs under £200 and comes with a cd containing 100 classic books.

Apparently there are thousands of titles available for download from Waterstones, and others I imagine.

This is what the site says about it:

Synopsis

In addition, the screen allows for high contrast and high resolution, with a near 180° viewing angle. The text can also be changed between three different font sizes. Ultra Portable: A perfect travel companion, the Reader from Sony offers a unique, on-the-go reading experience. With a compact and lightweight design, you can take it almost anywhere and read whenever you want. More compact than many paperbacks, it weighs just nine ounces (without cover), is only half an inch thin and holds up to 160 eBooks. You can easily hold it in one hand, and with its rechargeable battery you can turn up to 7,500 continuous pages on a single charge.

Check it out – this must be the future because Jackie says she would never use it.  To me that confirms everybody will get one soon. :-)

It’s obviously priced for early adopters now and will come down soon.

I think I’ve found my next Christmas present.
