How Do I Put Video In My Website

by stevensreeves on August 26, 2009

Here’s an example of something really useful for sales and marketing that just isn’t possible with typical desk top software -it needs Internet to work.

YouTube has been popular for a long time now in the social space.  Some forward thinking businesses have been using it to broaden the range of content they offer.  They proved video could add real value.
YouTube’s biggest problem though was quality.  Video reproduction on YouTube is horrible and just not up to the standard required for business level communication.

The business alternative was Camtasia, which offered very high quality recording and editing, and built excellent swf files for hosting on servers.  The videos could be accessed via URL, but unfortunately not embedded in web pages.

Addressing this owners Techsmith came out with the Screencast service.  Now we could upload the swf files, host them at Screencast and embed them in our own web pages.

Broadening its coverage Techsmith came out with Jing, a screen recording program which automatically uploads files to Screencast, from where the file can be embedded in our own pages.

Recent entrants into the video recording area are Screentoaster and Screenr – both of which look pretty good, although they are limited in edit capabilties.

Embedding videos in web pages isn’t difficult but does require a) the ability to get to the html code and b) the ability to edit it.  So this isn’t probably the best way for novices and those less confident to go about presenting video.

The simplest way to get video into blog posts is use Posterous as a staging site, emailing a link to the video to Posterous and then autoposting the article to the blog.

The way this works is so elegant it’s hard to believe.  More on Posterous in a post about blogging.

Not sure about video? – Even the SBA is using YouTube to deliver its messages to entrepreneurs.
