Unless you wake every morning to Google Reader full of blog updates about technology and social networking, you’ll probably have missed a mini furore building about the announcement of Google Buzz.
Understandably whenever Google comes up with something new shudders occur all over the world, particularly in those start-ups planning to make millions in the social networking space. And if you have an iPhone with Google Apps running you’ll see lots of below the radar stuff – like Latitude, maps with location sharing. This morning I checked mine and found something new – Buzz.
It’s only for Gmail users (a good reason to get a Gmail account if you don’t have one?) so there’s one of Google’s objectives. It allows us to “follow” others and vice versa. It allows status updates, like Twitter but without the limitations, and posts those updates to our Google Profile.
I haven’t had time to work through if this will make it into my daily activities but for the moment that seems unlikely.
It posts Friends updates to the email inbox – there’s too much crap in mine already.
It isn’t available in the Apps version of Gmail (yet) and the iPhone interface is poor.
I can’t find enough time to participate in the other places you find me – Twitter, Friendfeed, LinkedIn, Facebook, Posterous – let alone adding one more.
Billy No Mates. The whole business of meeting new people via social networking was fun and productive a year ago, but now its a pain in the ass. The vast majority of my email contacts (just about everybody I know) has either refused to try, or given up on the concept. Even my family rarely adds anything to Facebook.
Google Wave. I really like that stuff but nobody I know will use it for anything. With all the fuss made about Wave we could have expected some strong adoption – like mail. But we didn’t get that – it tanked, for me and mine at least. Buzz isn’t that different, and certainly not enough to get to people who won’t use any of the others.
